Awareness Walk - Plastic - 2022

GO GREEN

Plastics outlive us and we out live our children. Let's bring a small change not only in our habits but also in our mindset. Every year, 500 billion plastic bottles are produced worldwide. In 2020 alone we generated more than 500 million tones of plastic, 900% more than in 1980. Plastic in the ocean is already more than 150 million tons of waste. By 2050, they could contain more plastics than fish. Each year around eight million tons of plastic ends up in our seas and oceans.

Plastic bags start out as fossil fuels and end up as deadly waste in landfills and the ocean. Birds often mistake shredded plastic bags for food, filling their stomachs with toxic debris. For hungry sea turtles, it's nearly impossible to distinguish between jellyfish and floating plastic shopping bags. Fish eat thousands of tons of plastic a year, transferring it up the food chain to bigger fish and marine mammals. Microplastics are also consumed by people through food and in the air. It’s estimated that globally, people consume the equivalent of a credit card of plastic every week. Even cows and other animals consume plastics. The menace of plastics is now threatening our existence. Time has come for us to do our small bit to save the earth.

Don Bosco Alumni Liluah organized an Awareness Walk ( Rally ) on Sunday, 31st July at 9 AM, with the Adult literacy project students, alumni members, Bro Lawrence Mondal represented the Salesians of the house and had encouraged us to conduct the awareness Walk. The walk took an approximate 2 Km circular route from DBL and back covering GT road, Belur Bazar, Howrah Road.

We are very thankful to Bro Lawrence Mondal for his active participation, Seniors Prabhat Saraf, Kamal Ag, Vineet Ag, Binay Yadav, Kaifi Aajmi, Rajesh Saraf, Bikash Saraf, Bijay Fatehpuria, Mahip Mittal, Sanjay Yadav Abhishek Sharma, Ashish Debnath, Arpit Bansal, Saurabh Ag, Piyush Lal Nagar etc were present, AEP teachers and students. Thank you all. Thanks to Mr Anil Agrawal for organizing this awareness Walk. Thanks to Vineet and Kamal Ag for the snacks.

Very grateful to the Officer in Charge of Belur Police station for providing us an escort vehicle.

And regards and thanks to our Delegate Fr Manoj Jose for the encouraging and guiding us to support the mammoth steps being initiated by governments all over the world.
